Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth satellite. Launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957, it was a 58 cm (23 in) diameter polished metal sphere with four external radio antennae to broadcast radio pulses. Its launch marked the start of the Space Age and the U.S.-Soviet space race. The satellite orbited for three weeks before its batteries died and then silently for two months before reentering Earth's atmosphere.
